Scavenger Tip #4

Last week Wednesday I had a very unexpected expense. I had to have an emergency appendectomy. Fortunately I have health insurance through Obamacare. So one of my scavenger tips for the day is please if you do not have health insurance look at how you can obtain some. Without it I'd be thousands of dollars in debt today from last weeks totally unplanned event. As a self employed person I'm so glad that I can obtain health insurance. Although it is an expense I'd rather not have to have, I'm glad now that I didn't just assume I could go without if I tried to stay healthy. No-one can forestall certain health events like appendicitis.

My second scavenger tip of the day is to save cardboard rolls that come inside bubble wrap, tape or other types of things. I use these as a sort of box when shipping small breakables. I just tape the item into the roll (tape over each open end) and then put the roll into a polymailer. It weighs less than most boxes and costs nothing. I hate just throwing out the rolls. You can also use them as packing material if weight isn't an issue.

  1. Great minds...I just used one yesterday to ship out some glass candle holders that I recycled from $store candles. Recycled glass, recycled cardboard is the way to go. I also save cereal boxes and any other kitchen box that is clean. They aren't as sturdy as corregated boxes but sometimes they are an extra layer and are enough protection without a lot of weight.

    1. Thanks! Yeah. There were a few months I went without insurance. I'm so glad it didn't happen then.

  3. Sorry to hear about your emergency surgery. Hope you're on the mend and healing quickly. I just got new and better health insurance thru the school system. I also applied for federal assistance to help pay for it (since I don't make as much money as the teachers) and I got my monthly payment lowered quite a bit.Very happy about that!

    1. I'm glad to hear that Lorraine. When I had a normal job I didn't have to pay much for insurance. Now that I'm self employed I realized what a big chunk of money it is each month and it seems like a waste….until something like this happens. I feel bad for people who still don't have insurance.

  6. It is really really awesome that you got insurance through Obamacare. It's the perfect example of why it's a needed program. I cant imagine the costs you'd be carrying if you paid out of pocket. And then Im sure your business would have been adversely affected. Glad you came out of it healthy and debt-free!

    1. Hi Jay. I agree with everything you said. I hope they never find a way to screw up Obamacare. I know you and Ryanne have it too.

  7. Hope you're back to 100% already!!! I have to say that I'm always trying to reuse stuff that I get. I was just thinking about this the other day. I remember many years ago I ordered some stuff and it came packaged really well with recycled materials. There was a little insert that said they were an eco friendly company reusing materials as much as possible to keep them from ending up in the landfills. I wish ii would have kept that so I could copy it. I remember thinking how awesome that was and not that they were cheap! LOL
