Charleston Church Shooting

This latest mass shooting in Charleston makes me feel I should say or do something.  It is so sad. So senseless.

I don't normally get political on my blog but I feel like I need to publicly say something. Right now I am embarrassed and disgusted by the country I live in.  I'm so sick of hearing of innocent people being killed because almost anyone can get a gun. Often the mentally ill, teenagers or young adults. Is this what freedom means? Free to kill people attending bible study? The continued racism. The police shootings. Everything seems to be getting worse.  Something needs to be done to change this.

I grew up in a family where the men hunted and fished. There were several guns in our home. I believe in the right to have guns for hunting and personal protection but I don't think that means we should not have greater gun control.

I thought this article about how other countries view us was interesting.  It kind of makes me want to move.

  1. Thank you Nancy for this post. Honest to goodness, I was thinking about doing one just like this. I try to stay positive and upbeat on my blog, but this horrific and tragic event has me so sad and upset, it's almost beyond what words can express. I watched the news last night and listened to the victims' loved ones forgive the shooter and I almost lost it completely. These were kind, loving and beautiful people and they were snuffed out in an instant by hate in their own country, in their own city, in their own church, not by a foreign terrorist, but by an American.
Jon Stewart said it best here:

  2. Thank you for the post. You are 100 percent right. So much senseless violence and hatred; yet the people running our country seem to only care about money. You are right: something needs to be done. I'm just not sure what?
Thank you for the thoughts. Praying for the people in Charleston.

    1. Thank you for commenting. I think there must be something we can do but I don't know what that thing is. It doesn't seem enough to speak by how we vote. I'm not the type of person to organize walks, protests or vigils yet I feel like that is what I should be doing. I know there are many people that feel the same. It seems like with the power of the internet there should be something we can do by banding together.

    2. I think the only thing we can do is be kind to one another.

  3. I think you have to consider the source where this article is concerned. Mexico has their own issues with drug cartels and breaching their borders with people wanting to escape to the U.S. Muslims have no place to talk either. The extremists kill people, and the conservatives oppress women. I don't know much about Australia.

Every country has a group of people who are considered to be of the lowest status. In America, there were different waves of immigration. When the Irish came, they were the lowest. Then, the Italians came, the Irish were slightly elevated and the Italians were the lowest. Black people in America have always been considered of lower status for some reason. But, now below them, are the people who are coming from south of our border. But are they really equal? hmmm? If you aren't white, you are looked down upon.

Even if you are white, there are classes. There will always be someone who you or I look down upon...as not as good...for whatever reason, whether it is class, race, sex, gender, religion.

People are pitted against one another continuously, so it's no wonder someone goes on the rampage. Hate, anger and confusion fuel these crimes.

Some people seem to be more concerned with what their neighbor is doing than they are in their own house.

Most of us get along, but a very small percent of a percent give us a bad name from those who are outside looking in. I seriously doubt China has room to talk. They rule with an iron hand. People are not treated fairly with trials like we are here. They are severely punished for their infractions, whether or not it fits the crime. This is what I have read, but I don't know it to be true.

I don't know what is wrong with people. It is their perceptions that cause them to act with such destruction.

I haven't read about this recent massacre, because I have turned off my TV. I can't take it any more. I have eliminated my Facebook activities to avoid political and religious strife. I am trying to take care of myself, and I feel I'm failing.
