Just Some Updates

I finally removed the last of free shipping from my store. It took me a couple of weeks as I had a lot of older listings (mostly books) that still had free shipping. The reason I wanted get rid of free shipping  was so that this didn't happen again. I've had my Bonanza shop on vacation since that happened so I finally was able to reopen it a couple of days ago after updating the listings.

Rummage sales have exploded in my part of the country the last two weeks. My least favorite word right now is "Huge". Almost every rummage sale is described as huge. I'd like to grab some of these people by the scruff of the neck and give um a good shake after I navigate to their off the beaten path sale and find it's anything but huge. Not even 'big'. Grrr. It makes me want to buy something just so it wasn't a wasted trip. Does this happen to you too or is it a special sort of person who resides in the midwest that likes to do this?

I've had a couple of great sales lately that I wanted to point out.

I wrote about the Buster Bunny in a recent post. He sold for $45 plus shipping! I paid 0.50 for him at a church rummage sale.

I bought this Bizzy Buzz Buzz a long time ago but I didn't list it until recently. Nostalgia for your childhood toys is worth big bucks! Paid a couple of dollars for it at most and it sold for $99! plus shipping. I remember having one of these when I was a kid.

Off the topic of reselling I've been spending a lot of emotional energy lately on my Mom who has dementia. My parents actually both have dementia and live in assisted living memory care near me.

My mother's dementia is much more difficult than my Dad's. One of the saddest and most difficult things I've been dealing with the last couple of years having a parent with dementia isn't the actual dementia but has been fighting and being a witness to the treatment by facilities and medical professionals of our old people including my Mom and Dad. It is  painful and frustrating and makes me so angry as I want this difficult time in my Mom's life to be as happy as possible.

Some of the issues we've seen are the over medicating of people with sedatives, being pressured to sedate a parent by a physician, safety hazards that go unchecked, underpaid, overworked caregivers/aides, bad caregivers who spend more time on their phones and butts than interacting with the residents and many other things. I could go on and on and maybe will in another post.

In some ways things are much better than 20 years ago but don't believe the pictures you see in the ads of all of the smiling elderly with the smiling caregiver behind them. It is simply advertising like any other industry.

You'll be surprised when you start visiting care facilities at the costs and what can keep you out of a beautiful facility. The best facilities are for the wealthy and the people who do not have difficult behaviors. Most facilities in my part of the country require a person to be able to pay one to two years privately before they will accept Medicaid. This equates to $60,000 to $120,000 per parent. If you can't afford that then you move on to the places that will accept Medicaid sooner. Thus you are limited to those available in your community or to place your parent in another community away from family. The better a facility is the longer the waiting list and the choosier they can be when picking who they take. It's a stressful process. You finally think it's over when you find a facility that seems like a good fit. You've only begun because the state of care in our country is really sad. It may appear pretty on the outside. You'll find nice looking buildings now made to look more like homes. Wide open spaces. Private rooms. My parents are in one of the better places in our community in the price range that most normal people can afford. Yet though we toured many places and found them the best they could afford there are many problems facing us. It's quite stressful and painful. Here is a recent article I read.

I'm 51 and I know some of my readers are in my age bracket. In 20 years or so we will be at this point in our lives. It is predicted that cases of dementia and need for care facilities are going to explode in the next 20 years as the baby boomers arrive at this stage in life and that we are not prepared. As resellers we talk about getting out of the corporate world to enjoy life and not worry about making more money than we need. How many of us are planning for possible life in a care facility? I know I'm not preparing. If you don't have a couple hundred thousand in the bank when you get to this age and you happen to get dementia this is what you face.

Keep in mind our older people. Is there something you can do to make a difference in your own communities? Many older people sit alone with no family or friends. Volunteer visitors can make such a difference. Even an hour a week. Do you have a special talent, hobby or topic you like to talk about? Share it with some elders. Many times the people that get the most attention in a facility are those that have the least dementia. It's easier to interact with them. Others who may no longer talk sit ignored except when it's time to eat or go to bed.

Lastly some documentaries I've watched that I'd recommend to you.

Alive Inside (You can watch on Netflix or Amazone)

I hope this wasn't too much of a downer post. Do you have elderly parents or a parent with dementia? Let me know in the comments.

Screen Capture Tutorial Creating A Photo Collage Link Insert To Place In Your Ebay Listing

This is a screen capture video tutorial on 'Creating a photo collage link insert to place in your ebay listing'. It's something that I just became aware of a couple of days ago. I think it's a great tool. The video is kind of long. Twenty minutes or so.

My Dream Store

This is a silly post in which I pretend I have unlimited funds to outfit my career as a reseller. Some of these links are affiliate links which means I would make a few cents should you have enough money to actually purchase my frivolous wants. There are a lot of more practical things I'd buy before these things like more shelves, a light tent etc but these make me smile. Feel free to add your own wish list in the comment section.

These pink poly mailers are from Amazon. They really aren't that expensive. Maybe I'll pick them up as a little treat for myself. Aren't they pretty?

And to go with the bags I'd have to have

Wouldn't you have a better day using the packing tape below? I know I would. I'd probably freak the postal worker out though. Maybe he'd have a better day too.

Or this tape. I would just get them all.

This organizer I'd put in the back of car to keep all my purchases upright and easy to carry. I think I'd probably need two or three of these.

Next I'd get a customized rubber stamp to create thank you notes or stamp on a packing slip

I might also need this chair. I love how it looks but it's made with bungie cords. Although it's rated well how comfortable can bungie cords be? I may have to string some over my existing chair first for a test run before shelling out the $350 for this chair. Doesn't it look cool though? And anything 'Euro' has to be great.

What would you buy if you had unlimited funds for supplies?

Come back tomorrow. I'll be doing a video tutorial for a new to me selling tool I discovered on ebay. It's something that has probably been around a while but I'd never really used it to it's full advantage before. I'm hoping it will help me get some buyers to buy multiple items. Sort of like the checkout counter at the store with it's temptations of magazines, candy and gum.

Enough fun. Must get to work.

KISS Tshirt

Edited To Add: With the help of folks on Scavenger Life I figured out that the tshirt is not true vintage. Thank you to everyone here and there for your help :)

Are there any experts on band shirts in my readers? I bought this KISS tshirt. It looks like vintage 80s or 90s to me but it could be one of those fake vintage 'look'. I couldn't find another KISS tshirt like it on ebay or Google images but there were so many I didn't actually look through them all. Just wondering if maybe it has some value. So if you have any advice please share!

Sales picked up after my last post. I was relieved somewhat. I'm still working on setting up the parameters for my listing experiment. I got lots of great feedback from you all.

What's Been Going On In My Store Lately

I think you get the picture..

I had one sale on ebay since Sunday. Yesterday. So I went multiple days with 0 sales. Hard to stay upbeat I'm sure you all can understand. I did have one sale on etsy as well which was nice. I have listed every day on ebay but still crickets. I'm hoping things pick up this weekend.

I've been going through my store, category by category, and removing free shipping on the listings that still have it. Although I haven't been using free shipping for a while I still have quite a few old listings that offer free shipping. I'll be slowly going through all of them and taking it out.

Lastly, today I had a crazy wacky idea. I should probably keep it to myself it's so crazy :) So I believe what some other people believe, that the more you list the more you sell. Not just because you have more stuff to sell but I believe the ebay algorithm rewards you for listing. I'm a solo artist. I don't have a partner to help me with listing and I'm more like that turtle up there than I am a hare when it comes to listing. I normally reach a high of about 5 items a day. Sometimes a little more, sometimes a little less. I'd like to do 10 or more every day but with all things as they are I don't think that will happen unless I really push myself and I just don't see that happening on a daily basis. So here is where the crazy comes in. This morning I thought to myself, what if I could find an item that is cheap, easy to list, easy to ship and easy and reliable to source. I wouldn't be selling it to make any real money but because I can list it quickly and get my daily listings up to 10 or more. So what do you think? I haven't thought of the item(s) yet but I'm thinking maybe something from the dollar store. If you have any ideas let me know in the comments. And let me know what you think of my idea. I know it's not Scavenger Life style but I am trying to think way outside the box. Doing my taxes was eye opening when I saw my profit for the year. Although it increased since last year it is not cutting it. Not for all the work involved. Yet, I don't want to give up. I enjoy this way of life. I want to make it work!

The one lonely item that sold. It's a high school yearbook. Sold for $19.99 free shipping. I probably paid a buck for it.

Shipping Boxes

I was placing an order for shipping supplies yesterday and I thought it might be useful to show the USPS free shipping supplies that I use most often. I started out mainly using the flat rate supplies but now have branched out and added a few others as favorites. So without further ado.

The box on the left is called the shoe box and as its name implies is perfect for shoes. I use it all the time for that but for many other items as well. The box next to it on the right measures 7 x 7 x 6 and is the perfect size for most mugs.

Next is the Tyvek mailer. They are pretty indestructible. I like them for added strength when sending something in a polymailer especially overseas. If it's going priority I'll throw it in the Tyvek mailer. I could use a box to provide the extra strength but that adds weight.

I use the next two a lot. They are similar in size to a medium flat rate box but cheaper if your item is light than paying the medium flat rate price.

Lastly I use this large box quite a bit. As it's name implies it is a nice large box. It is a little bigger than the Large Flat Rate and almost always cheaper depending again on the weight of your item. You can always compare when you do your shipping.

I never realized how many boxes were available free and how much I would use them once I figured out when they worked best. I usually offer my customer Parcel Select, Priority or Priority Express. On their end Parcel Select is usually the best deal and what they usually choose. On my end with my shipping discount Priority is usually a little cheaper or just a little more expensive. So the customer gets a free upgrade and I get to use free boxes!

Do you use the free shipping boxes USPS offers? Let me know if you have a favorite that I've left out. And Happy Easter. I hope the Easter Bunny left you something good.

BOLO Tiny Toon Adventures Buster Bunny

I went to a church rummage sale today. There wasn't much except really good bakery but I picked up this Buster Bunny plush new in its original box. I didn't know the toy but it was only a dollar so I picked it up. When I got home I researched and found out that the plush from this cartoon are pretty collectable. The cartoon is pretty funny as well. Here is a link to the completeds on ebay. Have you seen Tiny Toons?

I'm really interested in the conversation that has been going on over at Scavenger Life regarding Search Engine Keywords in your ebay store. I have edited all of mine and have noticed an increase in traffic and have quickly sold several items, some that have been listed 3 yrs, when I added them as search engine keywords. A caller also inquired about this topic on Ebay Radio recently. Griff had no idea what she was talking about and said he would find out about it. Have you been reading along about this topic? What are your thoughts?
