DNTO Definitely Not The Opera

photo via this blog

Yesterday I found a new podcast (new for me). It's called DNTO which stands for Definitely Not The Opera. It's similar to This American Life on NPR. Each episode is about an hour and focuses on one topic. Host Sook-Yin Lee shares five or six stories that explore that topic in different ways. I found this Canadian podcast on a blog that I follow (see my sidebar) Things I Find In The Garbage. Martin who writes this blog was featured on DNTO on an episode where the topic was…wait…..can you guess? …GARBAGE! Yes the whole episode was on garbage. That may not sound so great but it is. I listened to the entire episode and it is a scavengers dream podcast. You must go check it out. I love to listen to a podcast when I work. It makes for a much better day of taking photos, shipping or cleaning dirty vintage stuff when you're engrossed in a good podcast. Unfortunately until yesterday I didn't have enough! I had my favorite Scavenger Life and a new one Serial and some Youtube resellers I would listen to when desperate but I didn't have enough to fill my roster. Now I do. I have loads of DNTO to catch up on. I don't even know how many There are six years worth. but it looks like it will take me a while to catch up. I listened to three yesterday; the episode with Martin on garbage (my favorite), an episode on Art, and an episode on Regret. Please check out the one on garbage if nothing else. Trust me you won't be able to stop with just one.

So am I just way behind the times? Does everyone else already know about this gem LOL? Please go listen now and then come back and tell me your thoughts.

  1. Thanks for the link Nancy. I also love personal finance, so I listen to Dave Ramsey's audio archives. I missed a couple of weeks and need to catch up, but it's my motivation for paying off debt and being smart with money. It's really good too. I'm also heavy into audio books. Our library has free online downloads and I try to listen to both fiction and non-fiction. I actually have more stuff to listen to, than I do time to listen to them. But if I were Ebaying full time, I might have the time to catch up! :)

    1. Thanks for the recommendations Margaret. I'll have to check DR out. I think our library has free downloads too! I forgot about that. Thanks for the reminder :)

    2. Margaret I just downloaded my first audio book from my library. How cool! Here I've been purchasing ebooks from Amazon all this time. This is going to save me some money.

    3. Well I'm happy I was able to save you some money Nancy! ;) We pay $200 a year for our library membership, but my hubby and i go through tons of audio books. My hubby goes through probably 2 a week, sometimes more. So even the $200 saves us $. I like to listen when I'm cleaning or gardening, etc.

    4. I assumed the books available for free would just be old classics but there is all kinds of books. I never heard of having to pay for a library membership. I thought all libraries were free.

    5. Our town doesn't have it's own library, it from a town over. Some of our town pays taxes that go into that library, so membership is free, but our section does not. So we have to pay for membership. But if you look at a breakdown of your taxes and see how much goes to your local library, it comes out to be about the same.

It's really amazing the types of audio books you can download. Almost anything is available, new, etc.

    6. I see what you're saying. We all pay for our libraries one way or another. It is amazing what you can download. I used to feel bad when I paid for a download on amazon and then didn't really enjoy the book. Now if I get something from the library which I did the other day, if I don't like it I don't feel bad and don't feel like I have to finish it. I'm sure I spent at least $100 last year on ebooks from Amazon. What a great resource for people who can't leave their homes or who live far from a library. This would make a good topic for a blogpost :)

  2. I keep hearing about great podcasts, but I've never gotten around to listening to any because I'm a huge audiobook fan, and always have more books to listen to than I can get through (I only make it through about one per week). I download audio books from my library and check out books on CD too. In fact, last night I was up taking eBay photos, and listening to an audiobook. It was nearing midnight, but I only had one disc left and I really wanted to find out how the book ended so I decided to stay up a bit later than I had originally planned and do some listing while I finished it. Well . . . the last CD wouldn't play! Darn it! It really left me hanging. I'll be off to the library this afternoon to pick up a print copy so I can finish it! :-)

    1. Ugh. That's torturous. That sounds like the time I was watching a videotaped survivor episode (the last episode) and the tape stopped right when they were going to announce the winner.

    2. Even if you don't have time to start watching the podcast regularly I highly recommend the episode on garbage. It was engrossing and just a bit over an hour long.
